Hello Everyone! My name is Tessa Davis and I am here on the ground at the Bishop Asili Health Clinic in Uganda working as a consultant for the Just Like My Child Foundation. I first came to Uganda in March of 2006 with the Peace Corps and underwent an intensive eleven-week program that included cultural, technical, language and health and safety training. During this time I lived with a Luganda speaking, Ugandan host family, who gave me an opportunity to practice the local language and begin the process of cross-cultural adjustment and acclimation to life in Uganda. They also gave me one of their female clan names “Nambooze”, which is the name that most Ugandans call me by. I was recently told by a member of the Bishop Asili Community Outreach Team that the name derives from a word in Luganda meaning ....Not one to pout….A friendly and social activist. Once my training was complete I began my two year Peace Corps service in a tiny village not far from Bishop Asili called Kiwoko. I learned to live as a Ugandan lives, with no electricity or running water. Reading by the light of a gas lantern at night and collecting my water from a bore hole to be poured in a basin for bathing and boiled for drinking. I became skilled in the art of washing clothing by hand and baking over a local charcoal stove.  My Ugandan counterpart and I spent the two years developing and implementing plans focusing on key areas of school improvement and staff development for the primary schools that surround Kiwoko. As a secondary project I worked with the Kiwoko Community to develop a library and engaged in many discussions about the importance of literacy and establishing a reading culture. My counterpart and I worked with teachers to train youth, educators and communities in life skills that will help them lead more productive, positive and disease free lives though various workshops, one on one interactions as well as music, dance and drama festivals.  Much of our work with schools was done in Luwero District, which is how I came to know the sisters at Bishop Asili and ultimately came to know Vivian Glyck, the founder of Just Like My Child. I have found my experience in Uganda to be both extremely fulfilling as well as challenging, offering much in the way of professional experience and providing a real opportunity to integrate into a culture that is very different from my own. The Just Like My Child Foundation has asked me to utilize my Ugandan experience and expertise in order to facilitate the implementation of their projects in the most culturally appropriate way.  I am so pleased to be in the unique position of acting as a bridge between my own American culture that I know so well and the Ugandan culture that I’ve come to love, understand and am still learning new things about every day.

Recently, Country Director Tessa Davis went to visit the four girls receiving scholarships from the Just Like My Child.  All of these young women are tremendously bright and talented and with out the help of Just Like My Child never would have had an opportunity to have a formal education. At a young age they probably would have ended up pregnant or very possibly HIV positive.

The girls are thrilled to have the opportunity to go to school, as is evident by their radiant smiles!

(Left to right: Josephine Nalubombwe, Josephine Namata, Nyangoma Racheal and Veronica Nankubuge.)

Veronica Nankubuge is excelling in Mathematics! Go Veronica! Her teacher is very impressed with her improvement and class involvement throughout the year. Her teacher has every confidence that she will continue to advance as the year progresses and go onto P.5 next year

Nyangoma Racheal was praised by her teacher for being very friendly and social. She is extremely helpful in the classroom and excels at singing, dancing and drama. She has started out a bit slow academically because she has come from such a poor village, but her teacher thinks that she will advance as time goes on.

Namata Josephine is excelling in both Science and Social Studies. Her teacher says that she is on track and just needs to spend a bit more time studying. Namata seems to take her studies very seriously and Tessa has every confidence that she will succeed. Her teacher is certain that she will go on to P.6 next year.

Josephine Nalubombwe is excelling in Social Studies, which is her favorite subject. Her teacher has encouraged her to finish the homework packets that are given at holiday time to help supplement her learning. Part of the challenge is that Josephine is responsible for working around the house when she is home for holidays.

Clearly both Tessa and the girls are enjoying getting to know each other!

This is the aunt of Josephine Nalubombwe, who is one of the Just Like My Child's scholarship recipients. Tessa was able to spend some time counseling her on the importance of Josephine's education. They talked about the need for her family to support her by ensuring that she has time to study during the upcoming holiday.

This is the sister of Josephine Nalubombwe , one of the Just Like My Child's scholarship recipients. Tessa spent some time counseling her about the importance of supporting Josephine in her studies during the upcoming school holiday. along.

This is the home of Just Like My Child's scholarship recipient Josephine Namata. Both of her parents died of AIDS and she is being taken care of by her 80 year old grandmother when she is home from school for holidays. The grandmother was out on the day of Tessa’s visit to Kikoiiro, so Tessa was unable to counsel her on the issue of Namata having study time during the coming school holiday.

William Kiberu is excelling in school! He is doing particulary well in written English. His teacher says he is very friendly and cooperative in class.  She has every confidence that he will go on to P.4 next year. She hopes to hear him speaking more English as the year continues.

William reports that he is healthy, happy and has everything he needs. Although, he did request a ball so that he could play football with his friends on Saturday aftenoons after homework time. He really enjoys school! Social Studies is his favorite subject. (above, Tessa and William)

I was very happy to find Williams Aunt (left) and his Mother (right) at St. Peter's Primary School supporting him in his education. They were also very happy to see me. They send their greetings to all in the U.S. who have given William this amazing opportunity

Mon, 04 Aug 2008 18:29:48 -0700 The New Ambulance at Bishop Asili! http://justlikemychild.posterous.com/the-new-ambulance-at-bishop-as http://justlikemychild.posterous.com/the-new-ambulance-at-bishop-as

The Just Like My Child Foundation raised funds to furnish the Bishop Asili Health Center with a new ambulance.  Previously, seriously injured or patients in critical condition were not able to receive crucial health services. The ambulance allows Bishop Asili to help accident victims and members of the community who are unable to reach the hospital on their own

The new ambulance!

.

The Sisters at Bishop Asili report that the ambulance has increased their capacity to help the community and Bishop Asili now offers something to the community that few health care centers in Uganda can provide.

Sun, 03 Aug 2008 22:44:00 -0700 Kiwanula School Update http://justlikemychild.posterous.com/kiwanula-school-update-2 http://justlikemychild.posterous.com/kiwanula-school-update-2

In the past 6 months we have amassed a group of local building experts, community members and area leaders in order to begin the construction of the school in Kiwanula. In Luwero, Sister Ernestine Akulu, the founder of Bishop Asili Hospital and a respected community leader with the highest integrity and a shrewd eye for business, is guiding us in this process.  She has helped us meet some of the most respected and reliable contractors in the region. (View full slide show at bottom of post)

We have already met and reviewedplans with Contractor Fred, one of the best contractors inUganda, and an amazing example of “living positively.” He is HIV positive, but is very committed to working hard, supporting his church, and to showing the rest of the community that you can survive and do well while “living positively.”

( Contractor Fred)

One of the first things we did was to meet with the community to make sure that they are on-board with“co-investing” in building a school. The community will invest unskilled laborand help us make the bricks which will save quite a bit in terms of construction.  The community has chosen and selected the committee that will oversee the building of the school from the community side. We insisted that there be 12 committee members and that the team is gender “equal.” Women are clearly the ones who will push this project forward.  Women are very eager to share their experience and point of view about the importance of education.(Community members gather to discuss the building of the school.)

We have also visited a number of schools to see what model work best. This is St. Jude’s Primary School, the bestmodel we have seen and one that we will emulate for our model.  Sister Ernestine has met with school leaders and received building advice and blueprints from the headteacher of the school.

Their school includes a school lunch program, which is essential to ensuring attendance, brain development, and attentiveness in the classroom. They raise cows, goats, ducks, bees and an assortment of vegetables that can be sold for income generation for school development or can be used to provide nourishment to the children.  The children also come to the garden to get a hands-on learning experience. Proper gardening and agriculture techniques are important for any Ugandan’s future.

(A cow from St. Jude agriculturalprogram)

Currently we are dealing with the purchase of the land where the school will be built. (See pictures above.) There is a set of cultural protocol that must be observed when buying and selling land. Laws have been strengthened to protect land owner rights as illegal land has caused extreme tension in the country.

The land that we are purchasing on which to build the school was owned originally by a Rwandan man. When that man died he had a will allocating pieces of his land to his five children. Ugandan law states that one piece of land that is divided can be sold in pieces, but all owners of the original land must agree to sell off a piece. All five children have agreed to allow the piece of the land to be sold, but one of them lives and works in Rwanda.

Unfortunately the issue with the land has delayed the process slightly, but it's important that we remain patient and flexible in regards to cultural practices. Things will move quickly once the land title has been signed.
